Proper tree pruning performed at the correct time of year is vital in maintaining stronger, healthier and more attractive trees. For mature trees this pruning commonly includes removal of dead and dying branches, as well as removal of live branches to provide clearance for underlying roadways, walkways and buildings. It may also include reducing crown density to help minimize wind resistance and risk of subsequent storm damage.

With younger trees, the time to prune might be earlier than you think. Although frequently overlooked, structural pruning of young trees can greatly reduce tree care expense over time. This pruning involves selecting the correct trunk and branch structure of the tree, and selectively removing young limbs to encourage proper growth patterns as the tree matures.
